The challenge of not repeating past mistakes

Inner Voyage: Exploring Mind and Body

The personal story I am about to share transcends a mere recounting of life events; it explores the profound layers of our existence through a journey of insights and transformations influenced by four primary realms: neurological, biological, psychological, and emotional. Through exploring a pivotal moment in my life—the decision to let my son live with his father post-divorce—I will unveil the intricate interplay between these dimensions and their impact on the decisions I have made. But before delving into this narrative, let us briefly explore these dimensions that so profoundly shape our decisions during critical moments of change.

The Challenge of Change: Internal Resistance

The challenge of not repeating past mistakes often meets significant internal resistance on the path to change. Venturing into unfamiliar territory without a map tests our perseverance and will, pushing us into discomfort. This struggle impacts both body and mind, which have long adapted to old patterns. Even if these patterns are associated with pain or discomfort, our body and mind may unconsciously resist the changes being imposed. Understanding this resistance is crucial to unlocking the potential for transformation.

The Neurological and Biological Realms: The Foundations of Our Being

Our journey begins at the core of our biological and neurological being. The body and brain, intricately linked in function, lay the groundwork for our experiences. Neural pathways in the brain, shaped by past experiences, can either facilitate or impede our ability to embrace new circumstances. Biological responses to stress and change, such as the surge of adrenaline or the release of cortisol, play pivotal roles in how we tackle life's challenges or avoid them.

The Psychological Dimension: Interpreting the Soul

The psychological realm is where we interpret our biological responses and assign them meaning. This dimension delves into our thought processes, beliefs, and perceptions, shaping our demeanor and influencing how we perceive our abilities and self-worth. My decision to leave my son with his father post-divorce evolved within this realm, driven not by a lack of love but by a deep-rooted belief, shaped by my psychological narrative, that it was the right decision for him.

The Emotional Landscape: The Heart of Our Decisions

Emotions, the vibrant colors of our inner world, play a central role in our decision-making process. The emotional dimension significantly influences our choices and behaviors. Feelings such as love, fear, joy, sadness, guilt, and shame can drive us to take action or deter us from taking critical steps. A nuanced understanding of these emotions and their influence can lead to deeper insights into our motivations, paving the way for a more conscious and thoughtful approach to change. The emotional repercussions of feelings like inadequacy, guilt, and shame were pivotal in influencing my decision to let my child live with his father. The fear of replicating a painful experience for my son profoundly shaped my maternal choice, illustrating how guilt and shame are not merely emotions but potent forces that can dictate our lives and our children's futures.

When Change Ignites an Inner Journey: Navigating Divorce and Motherhood

Faced with deep fears of "not being good enough" after the divorce, I was confronted with a heartbreaking decision: to let my son live with his father. My childhood, characterized by feelings of not belonging and low self-esteem, greatly influenced my sense of inadequacy and shaped my decisions. This internal conflict was both psychological and neurological, with ingrained thought patterns from my past leading me to doubt my abilities as a mother.

Physiologically, the stress and emotional pain of this decision triggered significant biological responses. My body responded to intense feelings of guilt and sadness by releasing stress hormones, affecting my overall health and day-to-day decision-making. This turmoil highlighted the profound effects of my early experiences and my current beliefs.

The Intersection of Compromise and Pressure

During the divorce, I found myself making significant compromises, mistakenly believing that maintaining an amicable relationship with my ex-husband for the sake of our son meant giving up my rights to child support and our home in favor of the family business remaining in his hands. Despite the age difference and his intentions to remarry and have more children—a path I knew I wouldn't take—I found comfort in the idea that my son might enjoy the big, loving family I always wanted for myself.

We agreed to a trial period of one year, during which I opened a new business and my son started first grade. Although this arrangement initially seemed beneficial, as my ex-husband's well-established business allowed him to provide well for his son, it soon became clear that he was also using the situation to put financial and emotional pressure on me. This pressure convinced me that it was in our son's best interest to stay with him.

Despite the complexities, my ex-husband and I maintained a cordial relationship, which reassured me during the trial year. However, everything changed when he remarried seven years later. His new wife felt threatened by our close relationship and actively worked to undermine it, even going so far as to cancel my attendance at my son's Bar Mitzvah under false pretenses. Her actions, and my ex-husband's obedience, hurt me deeply, highlighting a betrayal that made me realize it was time for my son to live with me. I felt prepared and confident that I could provide the nurturing environment he needed.

Confrontation and Liberation: Finding Light Within the Abyss

A few years after closing my business, I decided to embark on a transformative journey to India, supported by my ex-husband's encouragement. This decision came shortly after discovering that I had cervical cancer. My journey to India became a deep exploration of my soul. Alone and far removed from the landscapes of my childhood, I allowed myself the space to explore the complex influences of various realms on my existence. In the tranquility of India, I learned to recognize and accept myself, to trust in my ability to reshape my reality, and to understand how every decision is influenced by a complex network of dimensions.

This newfound understanding transformed how I navigate life, enabling me to act in a more conscious, healthy, and authentic manner. Seven years into my personal journey, my son, of his own free will and with my encouragement, chose to join me in Canada. There, he experienced the richness of living between two cultures—a journey for which he is profoundly grateful, offering him the opportunity to lead a doubled and enriched life beyond the confines of his childhood. Looking back, the path I chose, despite its difficulties and challenges, laid the groundwork for personal growth and development for both my son and myself. It taught me that the power to change and adapt is always within reach.
